How To Get Beautiful Wood From Ugly Logs

Birch · ·

We start with a couple of ugly log segments that appear unsalvageable. We then:

  • split the logs into usable blanks
  • hew the decaying and unusable wood from the blanks with an axe
  • smooth the surface of the blanks with a drawknife

Together, these steps reveal beautiful quartersawn wood usable for any number of small woodworking projects.

Splitting Wedge

This splitting wedge used in this video is at least 50 years old. If I had to replace it or add to my collection I would get a Gransfors Bruks splitting wedge. An expensive splitting wedge to be sure, but also one of unassailably high quality. A tool your great grandchildren will fight over. You won’t be disappointed.

small sledgehammer

This not the exact same hammer used in the video. However, it is very similar.

Lie-Nielsen Curved Blade Drawknife

This drawknife appears to be out of production at the moment.

Galbert Drawsharp by Benchcrafted

Sharpening a drawknife without one of these is straight up masochism. Get one of these and save your time for actually making stuff.

Carving Axe

The Wetterlings axe I use is no longer in production. An excellent, if not better carving axe is the Gransfors Bruks Swedish Carving Axe.

RetiCAM smartphone tripod mount with XL conversion kit

This is a terrific, well priced smartphone tripod mount. Amazingly, almost the entire mount is made from METAL! The size range and quality of this mount mean you won’t be replacing it every time you get a new smart phone. Comes with a decent zipper case too.
