This is what happens when you don’t pay attention to the instructions for epoxy resin.
Most epoxy systems have three times listed on the package:
- Pot Life
- Working Time
- Cure Time
The pot life of an epoxy system refers to the amount of time you have to work with the mixed epoxy before the resin starts to set up. Epoxy pot life is always the shortest time because when you mix epoxy in a cup (a pot) the container has the least amount of surface area to dissipate heat. Heat build up will make the epoxy cure faster, which in turn will produce more heat, which will make the epoxy cure faster etc.
If you don’t pay attention to the temperature range on the hardener/resin combination you are using the epoxy can quickly become hot to the touch and the curing reaction will proceed faster than you can use the resin you mixed up.
