Woodturning A Lidded Box From Scraps Meets Disastrous End

Birch · ·

An attempt to put scraps to good use by woodturning a lidded box results in the project flying off the lathe.

Most woodworkers regardless of how they work have a collection of wood scraps they have difficulty parting with. But what to do with all the wood scraps?

Woodturning, makes using wood scraps easy. Even small pieces which would be difficult to find a use for, can be incorporated into a multitude of different projects. In this video I start out with an idea to make a lidded box with an inset lid and a handle attached to the lid. Everything goes well until a couple of seemingly minor mistakes lead to disaster and the box body comes loose from the jamb chuck and ends up as a piece of designer firewood.

After recovering the box body from the floor, I deconstruct why the workpiece came loose and what needs to happen -or not happen- to keep this mishap from reoccurring.
