Woodturning – Applewood Bud Vase

Birch · ·

This dry applewood blank appears to be heavily figured. Whether the figure will be truly pronounced is unknown.

I rescued this piece of applewood from a neighbor’s yard several years ago while the tree was being cut down. There were several cracks right through the center of the trunk and I wasn’t sure what would happen during the drying process. However, I grabbed everything I had space to store and hoped for the best.

Fortunately, drying the wood very slowly has kept most of the wood I scavenged from developing any drying defects. Now I can get this wood into the lathe and start making something.

For this video I’ll be making a vase for holding a single fresh cut bloom or a dried flower.

Let’s hope the figure visible in the rough wood doesn’t end up being a woodturning mirage. Now let’s get to it!
