Woodturning – Using Scrap Wood To Make A Turning Tool Handle The Easy Way

Birch · ·

Scrap oak is crafted into a tool handle in minutes using a Oneway Thread-Lok Ferrule.

There are dozens if not hundreds of ways to make woodturning tool handles. Most of those methods require the turning tool to be pounded into the handle. Once the tool shaft is embedded into the wooden handle, removing the tool can be difficult if not impossible. And turning tools with long handles are often a pain to sharpen.

This can all be solved by using a turning tool ferrule which uses set screws to hold the tool shaft in place. Most turning tool ferrules like this have to be glued in place at the end of the handle. Gluing a ferrule in place is less of a problem than having the tool shaft permanently bedded into the handle, but still leaves us unable to easily remove and reuse the ferrule.

In this video I demonstrate one of the easiest ways to make a turning tool handle, by using a Oneway Thread-Lok ferrule. Once a properly shaped taper has been turned on the end of a piece of wood, the rest of the handle is easy! What’s more, all the parts can be easily unscrewed and disassembled for sharpening, repair or reuse.

Sit back and enjoy the show!
